Mame Kurogouchi Spring 2027

For Spring 2027, Maiko Kurogouchi looked to the school uniform and the way students turn something designed to look identical into a subtle expression of individuality. A loosened tie, altered hem or carefully worn collar can change the entire impression, and Kurogouchi brought that idea into her quietly sophisticated wardrobe of tailoring, fluid dresses and relaxed proportions.

The collection reworked familiar Japanese schoolwear codes with a distinctly feminine hand. A traditional “gakuran” jacket became a fluid ankle-length coatdress, oversized tailoring was shaped with darts at the waist, while sailor collars appeared across MA-1 jackets, dresses and knitwear. Classic pieces were similarly transformed through clever construction, from sculptural jersey shifts to roomy trousers with softly corseted waists and curved pleating inspired by the lines of a kimono.

As always with Kurogouchi, the textiles carried much of the interest. Sheer suiting retained the structure of tailoring while becoming almost chiffon-like, jacquard pinstripes gradually dissolved into checks, and a collegiate sweater was reworked in lightweight yarn with a translucent zigzag pattern. Even the smallest details, including an embroidered trim masquerading as a white collar, gave familiar wardrobe staples a more unexpected finish.

There was an ease to Spring 2027 that made the collection feel particularly wearable, but Kurogouchi never sacrificed the craft that defines her work. Instead, she showed how repetition can become its own form of creativity: take something familiar, alter it slightly, and suddenly it feels worth wearing all over again.
