Joseph Spring/Summer 2027
Mario Arena continues to reshape Joseph for Spring/Summer 2027, and this time the starting point came from an unlikely place: the interiors of Christian Liaigre. Arena’s discovery of Liaigre’s work on an old Australian chocolate warehouse led him back to a more personal connection, since the designer had also worked on Joseph founder Joseph Ettedgui’s home in the 1980s. The relationship between the two is neatly summed up by Arena’s observation that Liaigre brought a feminine edge to masculine interiors, while Joseph has historically brought a masculine edge to womenswear. For SS27, that exchange becomes less a literal interiors collection than a framework for thinking about proportion, restraint and material.
The clothes themselves are deliberately uncomplicated. Neutral basics form the foundation, interrupted by earthy green and pink, while Seventies-inspired tailoring brings a softer approach to structure. Virgin wool is mixed with wool-linen, cotton poplin is expanded across the wardrobe, and suede and leather are stripped back to almost nothing, with their undersides polished smooth so that traditional bulky linings can disappear. The effect is not minimalism for its own sake; rather, Arena seems interested in removing anything that does not need to be there. That makes the collection feel particularly suited to a warmer season without sacrificing Joseph’s tailoring credentials.
The most compelling idea comes through the fabrication. Mud silk, created by burying shirts in mud for weeks before allowing the surface to fade in the sun and sealing the resulting texture with yam juice, gives otherwise straightforward pieces a degree of irregularity. It is a striking contrast to the precision of the tailoring and tightly pleated dresses, which recall the fluidity of Halston. Even the accessories follow this balance between structure and softness: the python clutch takes its angular folds from a Victorian love letter, while organic gold and lapis jewellery nods to Elsa Peretti. These references are eclectic, but they share an interest in objects whose form feels considered rather than decorative.
What makes SS27 convincing is the discipline behind its lightness. Arena does not appear to be trying to make Joseph louder or more obviously youthful; instead, he is stripping the brand back to the qualities that can make it relevant now — strong tailoring, sensual fabrics and a distinctly understated relationship between masculine and feminine dressing. The Liaigre connection gives the collection its conceptual starting point, but the real progress is visible in the clothes. Joseph feels less like a brand being reinvented and more like one gradually rediscovering what it wants to be.
