Iris Van Herpen Fall 2026 Couture

For Fall 2026 Couture, Iris van Herpen once again pushed the boundaries of what haute couture can be. Presented during Paris Couture Week, the Dutch designer explored the invisible forces that shape the natural world, incorporating plasma and lightning into a collection that merged scientific research with exceptional craftsmanship.

Rather than using science as inspiration alone, van Herpen collaborated with specialists to integrate scientific processes directly into the garments. One of the collection's most remarkable looks featured plasma contained within hand-blown glass tubes that extended from the shoulder of a tulle gown covered in more than 30,000 individually crafted glass spheres. Responding to the body's magnetic field, the plasma created a constantly shifting display of light throughout the presentation.

Another standout piece explored the visual language of lightning. Developed using PMMA and a particle accelerator operating at temperatures below -100°C, the sculptural mini dress revealed intricate Lichtenberg figures — branching patterns created by electrical discharge that also appear throughout nature, from river networks to plant roots and the human circulatory system.

Alongside these experimental pieces, van Herpen continued to develop the fluid silhouettes that have become synonymous with her work. Billowing gowns in printed silk and silver-flecked chiffon appeared alongside her signature bubble dresses and delicate Japanese "air" fabric, balancing technical innovation with the movement and lightness that define her couture.

The presentation reflected the designer's long-standing fascination with the relationship between nature and science. This season, she turned her attention to forces that exist beyond human control, using couture to explore phenomena that are largely invisible but constantly present.

While the plasma and lightning garments exist as extraordinary technical achievements, the collection remained grounded in the craftsmanship that has defined Iris van Herpen's work for more than a decade. Every experiment, whether realised through glass, textiles or scientific collaboration, ultimately served the same purpose: expanding the possibilities of haute couture through curiosity, precision and imagination.
