Institution Spring/Summer 2027

In an era when so many collections are designed with the smartphone screen in mind, Galib Gassanoff offered something far rarer at Milan Fashion Week: clothes that demanded to be experienced in person. Presented beneath the frescoed ceilings of the deconsecrated Basilica of Sant’Eufemia, the Azerbaijani designer’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection for Institution was a study in movement, volume and illusion — garments that revealed their complexity only as the wearer walked, turned and inhabited them.

Gassanoff has built his reputation on sharp, architectural silhouettes and a sense of monumentality that often feels closer to sculpture than conventional ready-to-wear. This season, however, he introduced a newfound softness without abandoning the precision that has become his signature. It was a collection that balanced structure with fluidity, severity with lightness, and geometry with emotion.

The central idea was deceptively simple: the square. Beginning with flat planes of fabric, Gassanoff transformed geometric forms into garments that seemed to defy conventional construction. Tubular sleeves emerged from cropped crackled-leather trench coats in ways that made the eye question where an armhole might begin. Bouclé jackets and tops, finished with frayed hems, possessed an almost graphic clarity, appearing like moving pieces of modernist sculpture. Elsewhere, folded panels along shoulders and arms created cape-like extensions that gave tailoring an unexpected sense of drama.

These sculptural elements were offset by fabrics that moved with ease. Georgette dresses floated through the basilica like clouds of smoke, while silk gowns gathered at the waist and collar in soft drapes and ruffles. Cotton bouclé and lightweight wool added texture without weight, allowing silhouettes to maintain their form while remaining remarkably fluid.

Colour, too, played a significant role. A sequence of vivid red looks punctuated the otherwise restrained palette, introducing a note of intensity and symbolism. In Azerbaijan, red is traditionally associated with marriage, and these pieces carried an emotional charge that extended beyond aesthetics, grounding the collection in personal and cultural memory.

That connection became explicit in the final section of the show, where Gassanoff presented dresses crafted from kelaghayi — traditional Azerbaijani silk headscarves recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Historically block-printed by men and worn by women, the scarves were transformed into handkerchief dresses that linked craftsmanship, heritage and contemporary design. Rather than feeling nostalgic, these pieces demonstrated how cultural traditions can be reinterpreted with sensitivity and modernity.

What made Institution’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection so compelling was its refusal to flatten itself into an easily digestible image. These were clothes that resisted instant consumption, asking viewers to look closer and rewarding attention with layers of construction, movement and meaning.

At a moment when fashion increasingly competes for attention through immediacy, Galib Gassanoff offered a reminder that some of the most memorable collections are those that cannot be fully understood through a screen. Institution Spring/Summer 2027 was less about creating a viral image and more about creating an experience — one built on craft, precision and the quiet confidence of genuine talent.
