For Spring 2027, Adam Lippes returned to American prep, reworking familiar codes through lighter fabrics, fluid proportions and quietly intricate craftsmanship.
Adam Lippes has never been particularly interested in fashion for fashion’s sake, and his Spring 2027 presentation made that clear. Held at his Fifth Avenue home, the exhibition-style show focused on clothes that reward closer inspection, from waterproof silk shirting and featherweight shantung to linen-silk suiting and Swarovski netting. It was a collection where craftsmanship mattered as much as the overall silhouette.
The starting point was American prep, drawing on the designer’s early collections and revisiting khaki, navy, white, pinstripes, tennis shapes and boyish tailoring. But this was far from nostalgic. A 1920s Newport tennis dress appeared in shimmering netting, plaid was transformed into translucent organza and classic shirting was reimagined in waterproof silk. Familiar references became a foundation for something considerably lighter and more contemporary.
Proportion also played a central role. Voluminous trousers gathered at the ankle, parachuting skirts and billowing dresses contrasted with shorter, closer-fitting jackets, creating a balance between structure and movement. The result gave Lippes’ traditionally polished wardrobe a little more attitude, while the success of his wider trousers in stores suggests his customer is becoming increasingly open to a more directional silhouette.
Rather than chasing a dramatic runway moment, Lippes continues to build his appeal through clothes that reveal themselves gradually. Spring 2027 feels sophisticated without being precious, with the kind of thoughtful construction that becomes more apparent the closer you look. It is American sportswear, certainly, but with the volume turned up and the nostalgia left behind.
