Libertine Spring 2027
For Libertine’s 25th anniversary, Johnson Hartig turns butterflies, patchwork, paint marks and garden imagery into an exuberant collection shaped by curiosity and creative chaos.
Celebrating 25 years of Libertine, Johnson Hartig looked to the garden for Spring Summer 2027, presenting a collection titled “Out of the Chaos and Into the Garden” at New York’s National Arts Club. True to the label’s identity, the collection was built around colour, decoration and unexpected references, with butterflies appearing as prints and oversized paillettes alongside patchwork, embroidery and hand-developed surface treatments.
Some of the most interesting ideas came from Hartig’s own surroundings. Paint-covered drop cloths used while decorating his foyer became the inspiration for a splattered print, while garden tools were transformed into hand-silkscreened motifs. Elsewhere, a topiary coat featured hand embroidery depicting boxwood arranged in Versailles-style planters, bringing the formal geometry of a garden directly onto the clothing.
Patchwork remained central to the collection, with a Bloomsbury-inspired treatment appearing across linen and adding to the deliberately irregular quality of the pieces. The exaggerated butterflies, meanwhile, gave the collection a more playful dimension, transforming a familiar symbol of nature and transformation into something tactile and oversized.
After 25 years, Libertine still feels most convincing when Hartig follows an idea simply because he finds it interesting. Spring Summer 2027 brings together flowers, topiary, butterflies, paint splashes and everyday tools without trying to make them too orderly. The result is chaotic in the best possible way: highly decorative, deeply personal and unmistakably Libertine.
