Thom Browne Spring 2027 Ready-to-Wear

For Spring 2027, Thom Browne turned to the natural world, using butterflies, bees and beetles to explore transformation through sharply tailored silhouettes, intricate embroidery and sculptural couture-like construction.

At the centre of Thom Browne’s presentation at The Shed stood a giant chrysalis, its green tendrils and leaves extending in every direction. It provided an appropriately theatrical setting for a collection concerned with metamorphosis, although Browne’s nature was never quite the untamed variety. This remained a highly controlled world of precise tailoring, where the natural world was translated through the discipline of the suit.

Insects became the collection’s recurring language. Butterflies, bees and other creatures appeared across the shoulders of tweed jackets, while intarsia patterns allowed their wings to extend across the front and back of garments. The early references were relatively restrained: a daisy embroidered onto a jacket with a tiny bumblebee gathering nectar, or dragonflies woven into a tonal checked coat. As the collection developed, the insects became increasingly dimensional and surreal.

Browne pushed his couture-like patchwork techniques into sculptural territory, creating three-dimensional carapaces that transformed familiar clothing into something closer to an imagined insect anatomy. Ladybird spots and beetle patterns spread across rounded skirts, while eyes and mandibles became graphic details on fitted bodices. The effect was less about literal costume than about taking the visual language of insects and allowing it to reshape the proportions and surfaces of Browne’s tailoring.

The chrysalis provided the collection with its clearest metaphor: clothing as a process of transformation. Browne has long been interested in taking conventional American tailoring and making it strange, theatrical and highly specific, and Spring 2027 extends that idea into the natural world. The result is a collection where precision and fantasy remain inseparable — a carefully constructed wardrobe emerging from its own cocoon.
