Standing Ground Fall 2026
For Fall 2026 Couture, London-based designer Michael Stewart brought Standing Ground to Paris for its first haute couture presentation, introducing a collection built around precision, structure and an increasingly distinctive approach to craftsmanship.
Presented at the Irish embassy during Paris Couture Week, the show marked a significant moment for the young couture house, which gained international attention after winning the inaugural Savoir-Faire award at the 2024 LVMH Prize.
Having spent the past two years refining his techniques, Stewart focused on the relationship between form and construction. His signature covered beading became a structural element throughout the collection, shaping tailored jackets, coats and eveningwear with a sense of architectural precision.
The opening look, a grey jacket with a scarf collar and hook-and-eye fastening, introduced the collection's balance between restraint and experimentation. Elsewhere, a pearl grey cape-back coat brought a futuristic quality to couture tailoring, while a sharply cut black pantsuit demonstrated Stewart's ability to translate his dramatic aesthetic into more wearable silhouettes.
Eveningwear explored the contrast between structure and fluidity. Crystal and synthetic ruby embellishments traced the lines of black velvet column gowns, creating a sense of movement across the body, while sculpted bustiers revealed the designer's interest in precise construction and engineered silhouettes.
One of the collection's most intricate pieces was a sheer bridal gown worn by Kristen McMenamy, created using Carrickmacross lace from Ireland. The design took nine months to complete, with a team of women aged between 21 and 95 creating a motif of blackberry thorns and dragonflies — a reminder of the craftsmanship and time required for true couture.
While Standing Ground's aesthetic often leans towards the futuristic, Stewart's approach remains rooted in traditional couture techniques. His use of jersey, architectural cuts and hand-applied embellishment creates a dialogue between innovation and the history of made-to-measure clothing.
With his Paris debut, Michael Stewart demonstrated a clear design language built around precision, experimentation and craftsmanship. For a young independent house, the challenge now will be continuing to develop that identity while expanding the possibilities of what Standing Ground can become.
