Private Policy Spring 2027

For Spring/Summer 2027, Haoran Li channelled New York’s sporting energy through basketball references, American iconography and a distinctly Private Policy approach to reworking familiar athletic codes.

Private Policy’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection was shaped by the particular energy of New York in summer, with Haoran Li looking towards the city’s obsession with sport as a point of cultural connection. Basketball became the clearest reference, reflecting both its place in American culture and its unexpectedly strong following in China. That exchange between New York and Li’s own cultural perspective gave the collection a theme that felt broader than straightforward sportswear.

The basketball references appeared in playful and more subtle forms. Pastel-painted basketballs were carried down the runway alongside athletic bomber jackets, while a rugby shirt marked with the number 72 referenced Richard Nixon’s historic 1972 visit to China. Double-layered netted shorts and matching fitted shirts initially resembled sports uniforms before revealing open backs, turning functional references into something more sensual and fashion-driven.

The styling added another layer of attitude. Male models walked with a deliberately hunched, purposeful stride, while women balanced on heels with bags held tightly beneath their arms, creating an exaggerated portrait of New York confidence. Li also looked to his own memories of Tom Ford-era Gucci, translating that reference into a teal silk set with curved hems cut high above the waist and a deliberately provocative whale-tail shape.

The collection ultimately treated sport less as a literal aesthetic than as a language for exploring identity, movement and cultural exchange. Basketball provided the starting point, but the clothes moved between tailoring, sensuality, nostalgia and streetwear, keeping the collection firmly within Private Policy’s playful world. The finale’s sparkling Lady Liberty brought the New York references full circle, leaving the collection with a sense of place without becoming overly literal.
