For Spring 2027, Kate Barton brought a playful Hamptons sensibility to her experiments with trompe l’oeil, balancing illusion prints with a growing focus on commercially minded contemporary dressing.

Kate Barton’s Spring 2027 collection imagined a version of summer life spent between Manhattan and the Hamptons, with raffia bags, flower bouquets and even a puppy appearing to accompany the models. The joke, naturally, was that none of it was quite what it seemed. Trompe l’oeil has become one of Barton’s signatures, and she continued to use printed imagery to question the boundary between the real and the constructed.

That idea extended into candy-coloured jersey dresses and skirt sets printed with the illusion of draping, while bags appeared decorated with white tanks and baby T-shirts. Barton also introduced stripes, most notably across a spaghetti-strap maxi dress layered with iridescent sequins. The look recalled Todd Oldham’s Spring 1994 glamour, but its appeal came from feeling surprisingly straightforward: wearable, recognisable and priced below $1,000.

The shift towards accessibility is significant for Barton, whose earlier work established her around sculptural eveningwear and unconventional materials. Spring 2027 suggests a designer becoming increasingly conscious of the need to translate that experimentation into clothes that can exist beyond the runway. The collection was at its most convincing when the concept served the garment rather than becoming the garment itself.

There is still plenty of imagination here, but Barton’s next step may be to trust the clothes without quite so much visual trickery. Her strongest pieces suggest that the brand does not need an illusion to make an impression; there is something more interesting in seeing her sculptural instincts translated into clothes that women might genuinely want to wear.
