Junya Watanabe Fall 2026
For Fall 2026, Junya Watanabe presented an audacious collection for Junya Watanabe titled The Art of Assemblage Couture, transforming discarded materials into elaborate, sculptural garments. Drawing inspiration from the idea of reuse and circularity, Watanabe assembled gowns from unlikely elements such as scraps of fur, picture frames, shiny handbags, and fragments of everyday objects. The result was a striking demonstration of instinctive creativity that challenged traditional notions of dressmaking while reflecting the social environment surrounding fashion and consumption.
Many of the garments were constructed through inventive combinations of found objects. Leather gloves appeared as elbow patches, stiletto boots were integrated into the sleeves and back of cape like jackets, and pieces of motorcycle helmets shaped corset tops and peplums with dramatic curvature. Dresses incorporated sackcloth, gold foil, and materials resembling pleated garbage bags, while heavy buckles and motoring hardware added texture and visual weight. In one striking look, patterned curtains became a sweeping train paired with a bodice assembled from broken license plates and a glittering image of Marilyn Monroe.
Despite the unconventional materials, the collection carried an unexpected sense of grandeur. A stole crafted from stuffed animals draped over a long black dress, while silvery evening bags embellished a feathery white tutu. The theatrical presentation enhanced the effect, with models styled like silent film actresses walking slowly to a nostalgic soundtrack. Through this assemblage of castoffs, Watanabe offered both a commentary on waste in fashion and a hopeful reminder that imagination can transform even the most overlooked materials into objects of beauty.
