Issey Miyake Spring 2027
For Spring 2027, Satoshi Kondo looked to the Japanese concept of ma, finding beauty in the space between things and turning movement, air and volume into the starting point for a new wardrobe.
Titled “Figure of Ma,” the collection began not with conventional garment construction but with a vast 10-by-10-metre piece of lightweight fabric. Kondo and his team watched it move through the air, observing how it floated, shifted and responded to the body. The fabric became almost a character of its own, its movement providing the foundation for a collection interested as much in space and sensation as clothing.
That sense of lightness ran throughout. Voluminous silhouettes were constructed from fine, sometimes almost transparent yarns, creating layers that seemed to float around the body. Azure, raspberry, lemon yellow and pink appeared in both sheer and opaque textures, producing combinations that felt rich without weighing down the clothes. Horizontal pleats added another dimension, allowing garments to bounce and move as the wearer walked.
The experimentation was unmistakably Issey Miyake. Three-dimensional scans of torsos, developed with Wacoal Corp., were transformed into sculptural tops, while ripstop fabric created ballooning forms that expanded from jackets and skirts. The result was playful rather than precious, with clothes designed to respond to movement instead of simply holding a shape.
At its heart, Spring 2027 was an exploration of ma: the pause, distance and space between objects, bodies and movements. Kondo turned that seemingly invisible space into something tangible, giving the collection a sense of freedom and a wardrobe that appeared to breathe as it moved.
