Met Gala 2027 Theme Cancelled: John Galliano

The 2027 Met Gala was supposed to celebrate one of fashion's most influential and controversial designers. Instead, John Galliano: Horizons, the Costume Institute exhibition announced for spring 2027, has been cancelled following mounting criticism over Galliano's past antisemitic and racist remarks.

The decision comes just weeks after the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that its next major Costume Institute exhibition would examine Galliano's career, from his 1984 Central Saint Martins graduate collection through Givenchy, Christian Dior, his namesake label and Maison Margiela. The planned exhibition was intended to explore not only the designer's extraordinary creative influence, but also the controversy that transformed his career.

The timing became an increasingly sensitive issue. The 2027 Met Gala is scheduled for Monday, 3 May 2027, which falls on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Critics, including Jewish leaders and New York politicians, questioned the decision to stage a major celebration of Galliano's work on a day dedicated to remembering the Holocaust.

Galliano and the Met ultimately decided not to proceed with John Galliano: Horizons. The Met Gala itself has not been cancelled, but the Costume Institute has said that new plans for its spring 2027 exhibition and the accompanying gala will be announced at a later date.

Here is everything we know about why the John Galliano Met Gala theme was cancelled, what happened to John Galliano: Horizons and what could happen to the 2027 Met Gala next.

Why Was the John Galliano Met Gala Theme Cancelled?

The planned John Galliano exhibition was cancelled following growing criticism surrounding the designer's past antisemitic and racist remarks and concerns about the decision to honour him through a major Costume Institute exhibition.

In 2011, Galliano was filmed making antisemitic and racist comments in a Paris bar. He was subsequently dismissed from Christian Dior, and a French court convicted him of public insults based on race, religion, ethnicity or origin.

Although Galliano has since publicly apologised, spoken about his struggles with addiction and rebuilt his career, the events remain an unavoidable part of his public legacy.

The controversy surrounding the Met exhibition became particularly intense because the 2027 Met Gala is scheduled to take place on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, whose mother is a Holocaust survivor, publicly criticised the decision, while the Anti-Defamation League also raised concerns with the Met. Reports also indicated opposition from museum stakeholders and donors.

The debate therefore became larger than whether Galliano's creative achievements deserved a retrospective. It became a question of whether the Metropolitan Museum of Art should give its most prominent fashion platform to a designer whose career remains inseparable from a history of antisemitism, particularly on such a significant date.

What Happened to John Galliano: Horizons?

John Galliano: Horizons was originally announced as the Costume Institute's spring 2027 exhibition.

The exhibition was planned to trace more than four decades of Galliano's career, beginning with his celebrated Central Saint Martins graduate collection and continuing through Givenchy, Dior, his own label and Maison Margiela.

Rather than simply presenting a chronological retrospective, the exhibition was intended to examine the ideas, references and creative processes behind Galliano's work.

It was to be divided into three sections: “Bearings,” “Horizons” and “Atlas of Transformation.”

Together, they would explore the historical and cultural references that informed Galliano's work, including history, portraiture, theatre, literature, cinema and craftsmanship.

More than 200 looks were expected to be presented alongside sketches, accessories, photographs, research books, toiles, fittings and other material documenting the process behind his collections.

The exhibition was also intended to address the controversy surrounding Galliano's career rather than presenting a straightforward celebration of his work.

That makes its cancellation particularly notable. The original exhibition was conceived, at least in part, as an opportunity to examine the complicated relationship between creative achievement, personal conduct and institutional legacy.

Why Did the Met Choose John Galliano?

There was a clear creative argument for Galliano.

From his early London collections to his years at Dior and his later work at Maison Margiela, he developed one of the most distinctive visual languages in modern fashion.

Read our full look back at John Galliano's decade at Maison Margiela.

His collections frequently drew on historical dress, cinema, theatre, literature and painting, transforming those references into exaggerated silhouettes, elaborate construction and highly theatrical runway presentations.

At Dior, Galliano helped establish the fashion show as a form of spectacle. At Maison Margiela, he brought that same instinct for storytelling into a house better known for experimentation, deconstruction and anonymity.

His final years at Margiela were particularly influential. The Spring 2024 Artisanal collection became one of the most discussed runway shows of the decade, combining couture-level craftsmanship with historical references, exaggerated characters and theatrical beauty.

Galliano left Maison Margiela in December 2025 after ten years at the house, bringing one of the most significant chapters of his career to a close.

The proposed Horizons exhibition would therefore have represented a major institutional recognition of his influence.

John Galliano and the Met Gala

The controversy surrounding Horizons cannot be separated from Galliano's creative achievements.

His 2011 comments led to his dismissal from Dior and criminal conviction in France. Galliano subsequently entered treatment for addiction and began rebuilding his career, eventually becoming creative director of Maison Margiela in 2014.

His return to fashion was initially controversial, but his work at Margiela gradually received renewed critical recognition.

The Spring 2024 Artisanal show was a particularly important moment in that rehabilitation. Its theatrical presentation and highly developed couture techniques were widely praised, reinforcing Galliano's reputation as one of fashion's most technically accomplished and visually ambitious designers.

The question surrounding the Met exhibition was therefore not whether Galliano had influenced fashion. His influence is well established.

The question was whether that influence should be given the institutional platform of a major Costume Institute exhibition, and how a museum should balance creative achievement with the actions and beliefs associated with its subject.

John Galliano and the Met Gala

Galliano already has a significant history with the Met Gala.

Princess Diana wore a navy Dior slip dress designed by Galliano to the 1996 Costume Institute Gala, while Rihanna's 2018 Heavenly Bodies look was created by Galliano during his time at Maison Margiela.

The elaborate papal-inspired ensemble remains one of the most recognisable Met Gala looks of the modern era.

Galliano was also responsible for one of the most discussed looks from the 2024 Met Gala, creating a custom Maison Margiela Artisanal design for Kim Kardashian. Zendaya also wore a custom Maison Margiela look by Galliano that year.

His connection to the event therefore made Horizons an obvious choice from a fashion perspective. It also made the subsequent controversy more complicated, given how established his relationship with the Met Gala already was.

Why Was the Timing of the Met Gala Controversial?

The timing of the 2027 Met Gala became one of the central issues surrounding the exhibition.

The event is currently scheduled for Monday, 3 May 2027, which falls on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.

That coincidence took on particular significance given Galliano's history of antisemitic remarks.

For critics, the issue was not simply whether the exhibition would acknowledge Galliano's past. It was whether a high-profile celebration of his creative work should take place on a day dedicated to commemorating the victims of the Holocaust.

The combination of the designer, the subject of the exhibition and the date of the gala created a particularly difficult institutional situation for the Met.

Did John Galliano Withdraw From the Met Exhibition?

Galliano and the Metropolitan Museum of Art ultimately decided together not to proceed with the exhibition.

Galliano acknowledged the hurt caused by his past remarks and the continuing impact of those events, particularly on Jewish and Asian communities.

The decision was supported by Anna Wintour, who had previously played an important role in Galliano's return to the fashion establishment.

The withdrawal therefore represents a significant change from the direction fashion had taken in the years since Galliano's return to the industry.

Rather than attempting to proceed with the exhibition amid continued controversy, Galliano and the Met chose to step back and reconsider the project.

What Did the Met Say About the Cancellation?

The Met confirmed that it would no longer proceed with John Galliano: Horizons.

The museum has said that new plans for its Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala will be announced at a later date.

That distinction is important: the 2027 Met Gala has not been cancelled.

The date remains scheduled for 3 May 2027, but the exhibition and theme originally planned around Galliano will no longer take place as announced.

What Will Replace John Galliano: Horizons?

At this stage, the Met has not announced the replacement Spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition or the new theme for the Met Gala.

Until those plans are officially confirmed, speculation about potential replacements should be treated cautiously.

The change does, however, give the Costume Institute an unusually short window in which to establish a new exhibition concept, assemble its programme and develop the accompanying Met Gala theme.

For now, the only certainty is that John Galliano: Horizons will not be the centrepiece of the 2027 Met Gala.

When Is the Met Gala 2027?

The 2027 Met Gala is scheduled for Monday, 3 May 2027, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The event will continue to serve as the major fundraising evening for the Costume Institute, although its new theme and accompanying exhibition have yet to be announced.

The original John Galliano: Horizons exhibition was due to open to the public on 9 May 2027 and run through 9 January 2028. Those plans are no longer going ahead.

What Happens to the Met Gala Now?

The cancellation leaves the 2027 Met Gala in an unusual position.

The event itself remains on the calendar, but the theme that would have provided its creative framework has disappeared only months after being announced.

For fashion, that means the 2027 Met Gala will now be watched for a different reason: not simply for the clothes that appear on the red carpet, but for what the Costume Institute chooses to put in Galliano's place.

The cancellation also raises broader questions about how museums and fashion institutions approach complicated creative legacies.

Galliano's influence on fashion is difficult to dispute, but so is the significance of the events that ended his first chapter at Dior. Horizons was supposed to examine both sides of that story. Its cancellation shows just how difficult that balance can become when an institution moves from contextualising a controversial figure to placing that figure at the centre of one of fashion's most visible annual celebrations.

For now, the 2027 Met Gala remains scheduled for 3 May, but almost everything else has been reset. The next chapter will begin when the Met announces what replaces John Galliano: Horizons.
